It's a start.

We got the very first seeds of our vegetable garden in the ground this weekend. Carrots and Nasturtiums. It isn't much ( and certainly won't keep us fed) but it's a start. We always plant carrots in the crop circle on the patio. It might have been a fountain at one time, or a tree shrine. In any case it has been the home of tomatoes and carrots since we moved in. We always get a bumper crop. Crusty loves to plant in there, so it is mostly his space. It's still too early to plany out most things here, but I have Quinoa, scarlet runners and soybean seed on the way. Those will go up on the hill. In order for us to use the hill for garden space we first have to get rid of the pile of firewood, old cement and other debris that the previous owners left for us. We got a small start on that this weekend too. The four of us ( yes, everyone except the dog) staged a massive attack on the the blackberry bramble growing up the back fence. We had previously tried to tame it some but it was time for it to go. Sadly none of the vines fruited anymore or I might have had more sympathy for it. The combination of blackberry, staghorn sumac and hawthorn sprouts left the area completely uninhabitable. It still looks a mess, but there's progress. Patrick and Duncan brought down a bunch of broken concrete steps from the old bulkhead and we used them as stepping stones, moved the sandbox up there, added a bench from a theatre set, unearthed a huge mock orange.

The boys chased each other around the path for quite a while. It still needs plantings, more cleaning and colour! But it's a start!
